What Is Radiesse? How This Collagen-Stimulating Injectable Can Help You Look Naturally Refreshed

As we age, changes in our appearance aren't just caused by wrinkles. Over time, we also lose collagen, elasticity, facial volume, and structural support from muscles and bones - all of which can change the contours of the face and the overall quality of the skin.

If you've started noticing less definition along your jawline, volume loss in your face, or skin that doesn't feel as firm and youthful as it once did, Radiesse may be an option worth considering.

At ARTisan Skin & Laser Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, we love treatments that help our patients look refreshed and natural, not overdone. Radiesse is unique because it can provide immediate improvement while also encouraging your body to produce more of its own collagen.  It is truly our favorite method for facial support!

What Is Radiesse?

Radiesse is an FDA-approved injectable treatment made with calcium hydroxyapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a gel.

When injected, the gel provides immediate volume and support. But Radiesse doesn't stop there. The CaHA particles also act as a scaffold that encourages your body to produce your own new collagen and elastin.

As the gel is gradually absorbed, the collagen your body has produced continues to support smoother, firmer, more youthful-looking skin.

In other words, Radiesse isn't only about adding volume; it also helps your skin rebuild some of its natural support structure.

What Can Radiesse Help Treat?

One benefit of Radiesse is its versatility. Depending on your needs and treatment plan, it may address several common signs of aging.

Restore Lost Facial Volume

Facial volume naturally decreases with age. Radiesse can help restore volume in carefully selected areas, creating more youthful-looking facial contours without dramatically changing your appearance.  This is especially true for sunken temples and volume loss of the posterior face, the latter of which intensifies those jowls that no one is fond of near their mouths!

Improve Jawline Definition

Over time, loss of structural support can make the lower face and jawline appear softer or less defined. Radiesse can be strategically placed to enhance definition and create a more balanced facial profile.

Soften Facial Wrinkles and Folds

Radiesse can improve moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, including nasolabial folds, the lines that extend from the sides of the nose toward the corners of the mouth.

Rejuvenate Aging Hands

Our hands can sometimes reveal our age before our face does. As volume is lost, veins and tendons may become more noticeable.

Radiesse is FDA-approved to correct volume loss in the backs of the hands, helping them appear smoother and more youthful.

Rejuvenate the Neck

The neck is often one of the first areas to show changes in skin firmness and elasticity. When used as a biostimulatory treatment, Radiesse can help stimulate collagen and elastin to improve the appearance of thin, crepey skin and create a smoother, firmer-looking neck.

Stimulate Collagen and Improve Skin Quality

Radiesse can also be used in a more diluted form as a biostimulatory treatment. Rather than primarily adding volume, this approach focuses on stimulating collagen and elastin production to help improve skin firmness, texture, and overall quality.

Radiesse vs. Traditional Dermal Fillers: What's the Difference?

Not all injectables work the same way.

Most traditional dermal fillers are made with hyaluronic acid and are designed primarily to restore volume, enhance certain facial features, or soften lines.

Radiesse provides volume too, but its calcium hydroxylapatite formula also stimulates the body's natural production of collagen and elastin. With Radiesse, you have almost no chance of looking "overdone," as you have to create "you."

Neither option is necessarily "better." The right injectable depends on the area being treated, your anatomy, your goals, your desire for quick vs delayed gratification, and the type of result you're hoping to achieve.

That's why an individualized aesthetic consultation matters.

Will I Still Look Like Myself?

That's one of the most important questions we hear about injectable treatments, and our goal is always yes.

Great aesthetic treatment shouldn't make everyone look the same.

At ARTisan Skin & Laser Center, we believe in enhancing your natural features and creating results that complement your face. Radiesse can be an excellent tool for patients who want to look more refreshed, defined, and youthful without looking like they've had "work done."

When Will I See Results?

Depending on how Radiesse is being used, some patients may notice improvement immediately following treatment.

The collagen-stimulating benefits develop more gradually. As your body responds to treatment and produces new collagen and elastin, improvements in skin quality and support can continue to develop over the following weeks and months.

Results and longevity vary from person to person based on the treatment area, amount of product used, metabolism, and individual treatment plan.

Is Radiesse Right for Me?

Radiesse may be a good option if you're beginning to notice:

  • Loss of facial volume

  • Decreased jawline definition

  • Moderate to severe facial folds

  • Increased jowling of the lower face

  • Changes in skin firmness or elasticity

  • Aging or volume loss in the hands

  • Overall changes associated with collagen loss

However, the best treatment isn't determined by a product; you determine it.

Your facial anatomy, skin quality, age, lifestyle, concerns, and aesthetic goals all matter when developing a treatment plan.
